The burden of GERD has been steadily rising in Indonesia, largely driven by changing dietary habits. According to the Indonesian National Guidelines for GERD Management (2022), the general population prevalence is estimated at approximately 9.35%. Market research firm IQVIA reports that the Indonesian anti-ulcerant market reached approximately IDR 2.5466 trillion (USD 164.3 million) in 2025, maintaining a steady annual growth rate of around 6%. Furthermore, tertiary-care hospital data indicate that 55.4% of GERD patients present with erosive esophagitis, underscoring the critical need for accurate diagnosis and prompt, effective early intervention in clinical practice.

The symposium featured in-depth discussions on optimal, patient-tailored treatment strategies based on local Indonesian data, alongside results from a clinical trial involving 134 patients across three major hospitals in Jakarta.
The session was co-chaired by Prof. Ji Won Kim, M.D., President-Elect of the Korean Gastroenterology Association and Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine (SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center), alongside Prof. Dr. dr. Hery Djagat Purnomo, Sp.PD, K-GEH from RSUD Dr. Soetomo.
Delivering congratulatory remarks on behalf of the Korean Gastroenterology Association, Prof. Ji Won Kim stated, “It is deeply meaningful to witness the official entry of fexuprazan into the Indonesian healthcare market. As a next-generation P-CAB therapy, we hope it establishes a new milestone in improving the quality of life for GERD patients in Indonesia.”
Presenting as the Indonesian speaker, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, MMB, SpPD, K-GEH, FACG, FACP, Chairman of Pengurus Besar Perkumpulan Gastroenterologi Indonesia (PB PGI) and Professor at Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, noted, “Indonesia has a high proportion of GERD patients presenting with erosive esophagitis, creating a strong clinical demand for next-generation therapies capable of rapid and robust acid suppression from the onset of treatment. Establishing evidence-based prescribing guidelines optimized for the local healthcare environment—supported by Indonesian clinical data—holds tremendous academic value.”

Highlighting real-world clinical experience and trial data from South Korea, Prof. Ahn Ji Yong, Professor of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center and the University of Ulsan College of Medicine, explained, “In South Korea, P-CAB therapies were introduced sequentially to address the unmet needs of conventional PPIs, allowing us to accumulate extensive clinical prescribing experience. In a Phase 3 study evaluating 263 Korean patients with erosive esophagitis, fexuprazan demonstrated a 99.1% endoscopic healing rate at Week 8, confirming significant clinical efficacy.”
