The world of pharmaceutical research in Indonesia continues to advance, one example being the collaboration between the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Korean pharmaceutical company Daewoong. This initiative aims to strengthen local pharmaceutical innovation through open collaboration between industry and academia.

The establishment of the Drug Delivery System Research Institute (DDSRI) — a collaboration between ITB and the Daewoong Foundation — strengthens local pharmaceutical innovation through open collaboration between industry and academia.

According to Daewoong DDSRI ITB researcher Dita Ayu Purnamasari, the DDSRI Laboratory at ITB holds great significance as part of Daewoong’s long-term vision to promote high-tech innovation. The laboratory is equipped with industry-standard research facilities, including formulation, analytical, and dissolution labs; a stability room; and a tablet production area. It houses over 30 types of equipment for mixing, granulation, tableting, and coating processes, as well as advanced analytical instruments such as an automatic sample dissolution tester, triple-layer and double-layer tablet presses, and a coating machine.

Dita Ayu Purnamasari (Peneliti Daewoong DDSRI ITB):

This R&D lab serves as a gateway for technology transfer — bringing Daewoong’s advanced technologies to Indonesia.

In addition, we’re not only working on Daewoong’s internal projects, but also collaborating with various universities on research that addresses the needs of the Indonesian market and contributes to Daewoong’s own formulation development.

Stela Perlita Geraldine (ITB Student):

I’ve learned many new things, especially in operating Daewoong’s equipment and exploring methods I had never encountered before. Collaborating with Daewoong has helped me understand what the pharmaceutical industry is really like — not just theoretically, but through real, hands-on experience.

Currently, Open Collaboration has been established with nine universities in Indonesia: UGM, ITB, UI, UNAIR, UNPAD, ITERA, UNHAS, I3L, and the Bandung Health Polytechnic. This collaboration includes 22 active research projects and involves 36 talented young researchers contributing to the development of national pharmaceutical innovation.

One of the key outcomes of this Open Collaboration is the publication of scientific papers co-authored by Indonesian researchers and the Daewoong team.

Among these are projects on ropivacaine injection formulation development and Long-Acting Injection systems using Stealth Liposome and Liposomal Depot Systems, which can extend anesthetic effects up to 72 hours, making them a potential therapy for long-term post-surgical pain management.
