Daewoong Pharmaceutical Indonesia continued its commitment to advancing evidence-based diabetes care through two consecutive scientific programs in Central and East Java. Unlike the national launch event, the Semarang and Surabaya programs shifted focus to a more fundamental question: why comprehensive diabetes management, including kidney and cardiovascular protection, remains suboptimal at the regional level, and what physicians can do today.
These programs followed the national launch of enavogliflozin at FEN XIV & PIT PERKENI 2026 in Bandung on 27 June 2026, which introduced the molecule to national endocrinology and internal medicine experts.
The Hidden Burden of Diabetes Complications
Indonesia ranks seventh globally in the number of type 2 diabetes cases, with over 20 million people living with the condition. Despite this significant burden, complications, particularly kidney disease and cardiovascular risk, are frequently identified at advanced stages, when the window for early intervention has already narrowed.
Evidence consistently shows that 30–40% of patients with diabetes mellitus develop kidney complications, while cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in this population. In Indonesia, where diabetes prevalence has risen from 10.9% in 2018 to 11.7% in 2023, the need for integrated clinical education, reaching physicians across all regions, is more urgent than ever.
Addressing this requires not only awareness at the national level, but sustained scientific dialogue at the regional level, where the majority of patient care takes place. This is the purpose that Daewoong's programs in Semarang and Surabaya were designed to serve.
Semarang, 11 July — SMILE 2026
On 11 July, Daewoong participated as a symposium partner at the Semarang Meeting on Integrated Learning in Diabetes (SMILE 2026), held at Hotel Gumaya Semarang in conjunction with National Diabetes Day 2026. Organized by PERKENI Semarang Branch and PB Persadia, SMILE 2026 served as a regional scientific forum for physicians and healthcare professionals to discuss integrated diabetes care, from early intervention to long-term complication management. The event was attended by 202 doctors and healthcare professionals from Semarang, Central Java, and surrounding regions.
Daewoong hosted a symposium titled "Early Intervention in T2DM: From Renal Protection with SGLT2 Inhibitors to Long-Term Outcomes Through Adherence and Combination Therapy." The session was moderated by Dr. dr. K. Heri Nugroho HS, Sp.PD, K-EMD, FINASIM, and featured presentations by dr. R. Bowo Pramono, Sp.PD, K-EMD, FINASIM, and dr. Tania Tedjo Minuljo, Sp.PD, K-EMD, FINASIM.
dr. R. Bowo Pramono, Sp.PD, K-EMD, FINASIM, discussed early intervention in diabetic kidney disease and the role of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with mild renal impairment. “Diabetic kidney disease can progress quietly, especially in the early stages, when patients may not feel any specific symptoms. This is why early risk identification and timely treatment intervention are important. In appropriate patients, SGLT2 inhibitors have become an important part of the discussion because they support a more comprehensive approach to diabetes management, including renal protection,” said dr. Bowo.

dr. Tania Tedjo Minuljo, Sp.PD, K-EMD, FINASIM, presented on improving long-term outcomes in type 2 diabetes through adherence and early combination therapy. She also discussed the pharmacological profile of enavogliflozin as an SGLT2 inhibitor, including preclinical findings related to its binding affinity and inhibitory effect on the SGLT2 transporter.
“In type 2 diabetes, long-term outcomes depend not only on choosing the right therapy, but also on ensuring patients remain adherent and receive timely treatment intensification,” said dr. Tania. “Enavogliflozin’s higher binding affinity for the SGLT2 transporter and favorable oral bioavailability support sustained SGLT2 inhibition, which may contribute to consistent metabolic benefits throughout the dosing interval."

Its predominantly hepatic metabolism also might give more benefit in patients with diabetic kidney disease.
Surabaya, 12 July — Regional Scientific Launch Symposium
On 12 July, Daewoong held a Regional Scientific Launch Symposium at JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya in collaboration with PERKENI Cabang Surabaya, attended by approximately 200 healthcare professionals. What distinguished this symposium from typical regional forums was the participation of four specialties on a single stage: endocrinology, cardiology, nephrology, and internal medicine, a format reflecting the modern understanding that diabetes management is no longer a single-specialty undertaking.
Four specialist faculty members were present: Prof. Dr. dr. Agung Pranoto, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM (RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya); Dr. dr. Soebagijo Adi, Sp.PD-KEMD, FACP, FINASIM (Universitas Airlangga and Siloam Hospitals Surabaya); Prof. Dr. dr. Yudi Her Oktaviono, Sp.JP(K), FIHA (RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya); and Dr. dr. Chandra Irwanadi Mohani, Sp.PD, KGH (Mitra Keluarga Surabaya). Sessions were moderated by Dr. dr. Sony Wibisono Mudjanarko, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, and Dr. dr. Budi Baktijasa Dharmadjati, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, followed by a panel discussion.

Dr. dr. Chandra Irwanadi Mohani underscored the urgency of early detection. "Kidney complications in diabetes patients are often identified too late. And early intervention is key to successfully preventing kidney damage. Continuous medical education, bringing the latest clinical evidence to physicians across the regions, is one of the most effective tools we have in improving patient outcomes," he said.
Prof. Dr. dr. Agung Pranoto added, "The management of type 2 diabetes in Indonesia requires a continuous evolution of our clinical approach. SGLT2 inhibitors have reshaped how we think about diabetes management, not only for glycemic control, but for their broader metabolic implications. Bringing this scientific conversation to Surabaya is important, as our physicians here are actively seeking evidence to guide more effective, individualized treatment decisions for their patients."
Dr. dr. Soebagijo Adi stated, "The collaboration between PERKENI Cabang Surabaya and Daewoong Pharmaceutical Indonesia reflects our shared commitment to advancing evidence-based diabetes care in East Java. Scientific discussion on new therapeutic options is important to support physicians in managing type 2 diabetes based on the latest clinical evidence."

Daewoong's Regional Commitment
dr. Wicak Prasetiadi, Brand & Marketing Manager of Daewoong Pharmaceutical Indonesia, said, "After the national launch in Bandung, our priority is to bring scientific discussion closer to regional medical communities. Central Java and East Java both carry a significant diabetes burden, and physicians in these regions play a critical role in daily diabetes care. Through SMILE 2026 in Semarang and the Regional Scientific Launch Symposium in Surabaya, Daewoong aims to support evidence-based clinical dialogue on early intervention, adherence, and long-term outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes."
